How to Keep a Window Always On Top of Windows 10

April 16, 2018 by Nitin Maheta

Multitasking is something that every one of us struggles with nowadays. We happen to have an affinity towards the lethargic side of the beam balance. Even now, that we are so up and high about the growth of technology and its involvement and impact on us, we still like to have something easy as possible. Take for an instance, a bottle laying in front of us yet we hope someone will pick it up and place it in our hands. Science tells us how men are bad at multitasking and women to excel at it. This topic is quite controversial as both men and women alike have their own inhibitions of doing a particular thing in a particular way. At the end of the day, the work is done and dusted.

Similarly, when working on a computer sometimes it gets quite confusing and hassles bound while getting few things in order. While working on various things at the same time on a computer we prefer few items to stay on top for an easy task. Microsoft Windows is known as the best graphical operating system in the world but like everything that we know or see around us, nothing is perfect. There is no built-in way for users to have a window always on top in the Microsoft Windows operating system. Since, Windows 10 is now the foremost version that is used widely by everyone around the globe, not having the option to keep a Window on the top has become an issue which every one of us faces. Various third-party tools that have been developed allow a window to always stay on top making the multitasking game an easy phenomenon. Various such third party tools have been around for a long time some of which do not work properly with the new operating systems. Thankfully, the emergence of few other tactics, keeping a window on top has become easy.

Listed below are the ways of having your window kept on the top in Windows 10 with the help of third-party applications:

Contents

  • 1. Deskpins
  • 2. Turbo Top
  • 3. Auto Hotkey

1. Deskpins

For those of you who prefer using the mouse over keyboard shortcuts, using the Deskpins application software is the best option for you.

First, follow these steps:

  • After which, go ahead and run Deskpins and you shall find the pin icon in your system tray.
  • When you have successfully downloaded and installed the item,

  • Click on the Deskpin icon on the system tray
  • Select the window you wish to pin on top, you shall see the pointer transform to look like a pin and drag it to wherever you wish to see it

Once the needful is done, you shall have your window pinned up on top. These pinned windows have a red pin added to the title bar that helps differ from windows that are pinned and those that are not.

2. Turbo Top

The Turbo Top application is another application for the users who prefer to use the mouse on the keyboard. It sticks a menu system on its system tray icon so that users can find the windows always on top.

First, follow these steps:

  • Download and go to the file location to install the application [Link]
  • After which, go ahead and run Turbo Top and you shall find the icon in your system tray.

This third party tool that allows a window or windows to stay on the top is very basic and simple to use. It is a testament to other tools and applications on how neatly this program can get work done, hassle-free.

3. Auto Hotkey

Now that we have already mentioned the third-party tools and applications for users who prefer the mouse to keyboard, we bring to you the Auto Hotkey. The fascination with this whole idea of Auto Hotkey is that a user can make a one-line script that shall set your active window to be on the top always. The app sets certain keys and creates a combination upon clicking of which the window selected will be on the top always. The script is lightweight and does not use many resources. It also avoids cluttering the system. The Auto Hotkey is also used to compile scripts in a manner that executes on its own and this aide the Auto Hotkey program from running all the time.

First, follow these steps, do the usual

  • Download and go to the file location to install the application [Link]
  • After which, go ahead and run Auto Hotkey and you shall find the icon in your system tray.
  • Once the usual task is complete,

  • A user will have to create a new script first.
  • If you are already a user of Auto Hotkey, you can add the new script to the existing one or create a new one altogether
  • To create a script, firstly, right-click anywhere on the desktop.
  • Or else, right-click in the File Explorer window. Select ‘new’ menu and then choose the ‘Auto Hotkey Script’ option.
  • Give the new script a file name of your choice
  • Next, you are to right click on the new Auto Hotkey script and select the ‘Edit Script’ option (this opens the editing script in the Notepad)
  • Paste the following line of code at the bottom of the Notepad window or whichever application that you use.
  • Lastly, save and close the script and then double-click to run it.

Once done you will as the ‘H’ logo appears on the system screen.

After all of this is done properly, press Ctrl+Space to set any active window on the top and can redo it to remove it.
