How Do YouTubers Make Money?

July 17, 2021 by Nitin Maheta

YouTube is turning out to be a big industry, being launched in the year 2005 it has gained a lot of popularity rapidly. The recent event of YouTube, the fanfest 2019 in India, Mumbai was a big success. Many creators from India and from around the world participated like Mumbaikar Nikhil, Bhuvan Bam, Beyou Nick, etc. and they also invited the infamous Amanda Cerny. YouTube is both an online web platform and a mobile application web platform. According to recent statistics, around 5 billion videos are watched every single day on this platform.

The growth of YouTube is immense in the number of users it has attracted. This platform has always focused on improving its services and providing the best type of customer support it can. Changes keep happening so that the creators are given more and more creative freedom to do their work. From time to time certain YouTube events are organised so that people can socialise with each other. These events are crucial so that the creators make more contacts and can collaborate with each other in the future. This is the best place to get to know each other as there is no common work environment space.

How-Do-YouTubers-Make-Money

YouTubers tend to make a lot of money through certain ways and here is a list of some creators followed by their income:

  • Daniel Middleton (DanTDM) — $16.5 million
  • Evan Fong (VanossGaming) – $15.5 million
  • Dude Perfect – $14 million
  • Logan Paul – $12.5 million
  • Mark Fischbach (Markiplier) – $12.5 million
  • Felix Kjellberg (PewDiePie) – $12 million
  • Jake Paul – $11.5 million
  • Ryan ToysReview – $11 million
  • Smosh – $11 million
  • Lilly Singh – $10.5 million

But how is it that these YouTubers make so much money? Does YouTube pay them or is it the subscribers? For many people, these questions can be very confusing because there are numerous ways through which a YouTuber can make money and some of them are listed down below:

Contents

  • Advertisers/YouTube pay them to place Ads
  • YouTube Red
  • Live Stream
  • Brand Integration
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Promotion on other social media platforms
  • Being a brand ambassador
  • Merchandising

Advertisers/YouTube pay them to place Ads

The advertisement you see on the bottom of the screen or even the on the start of the video are chargeable, so if you click on the ad, then some amount will go to the YouTuber’s bank account. But can a new channel monetise their videos or is there a specific criterion to do that? YouTube’s policy clearly states that they share the advertisement payment in the ratio of 9:11, that means if the advertiser pays a dollar, then you get 0.55$ and YouTube keeps the rest.

Many people argue that this ratio is wrong and it should be very less but the truth is that it is not for us to decide. YouTube has made a great investment to be such a big platform and it has every right to charge whatever they want and if people do not like the terms, they can discontinue the use. This platform does not force anyone to be a part of it.

The criteria for a YouTube channel to be eligible for monetisation is that they should at least have 4,000 hours of viewing annually, moreover, a surplus count of 1000 subscribers. This whole agenda is set keeping in mind the various aspects like fake account creation as many people can create fake accounts and extort money by making inappropriate or offensive content.

YouTube Red

What is YouTube red? It is premium service started by YouTube in the year 2014 where customers are required to pay a specified sum($12/month) to gain access to some of the exclusive content of YouTube. Many creators are paid by this platform in order to contribute to the creation of the content of YouTube red. The concept is somewhat the same as that of Netflix, it has created its own originals by some of the most amazing creators like Pwedipie, Logan Paul, Jake Paul, etc.

Live Stream

The new stream system has brought a revolution to the industry of YouTube, the creators are more than happy as now they can stream and earn money at the same time. Moreover, the subscribers can interact with their favourite content creators through the way of pop-up messages known as super chat by donating some sort of amount. Many famous creators now sit for hours playing games or doing other stuff in order to interact with their army of fans. This concept was first seen in Twitch which is now adopted by YouTube to help its creators earn a decent sum.

Brand Integration

This is the most modern approach to earn money and many YouTubers are availing the benefit of this opportunity. In this scenario, brands approach you and tell you to promote them in the video; in return, they pay the creators a specified amount. These brands can be anything from a belt to a doorknob but the vital question here is how does a creator attract these brands? A YouTuber can directly approach the brand via email or through other means but the crucial thing is that the channel should be established enough in order to reach numerous customers. Without proper user base, no brand would integrate with a creator.

Affiliate Marketing

This method is very simple and can be used by any YouTubers whether he or she is just starting out. All they need to do is tie up with a small or big company that provide affiliate programs. These affiliate links can either be put in the description of the video or included as content in the video itself. When people would visit the site and avail the good and services, the content creator would get a specified amount of purchase made. If a YouTuber has a vast amount of audience, the chances are that he or she might be able to make a lot of money by this.

Promotion on other social media platforms

When YouTubers become famous, they attract a considerable amount of crowd and eventually they turn into social influencers. Social influencers are people who have a broad impact on a certain section of society. Why do brands approach people like these? This is because of the fact that people are highly moved by things that these people promote. For instance, a YouTuber named Aaron Marino has started his company after the initial launch of his YouTube channel and most of his clients are because of the content he creates.

Being a brand ambassador

In the initial days, only movies starts were given the opportunity to be a brand ambassador but now many content creators have started to get into long term contracts with brands. Being a brand representative is taking an initiative of promoting the brand whenever possible and being the face of it. In return, they provide you with remuneration and their products. These YouTubers may often be asked to create a post or two on their social media feed or even do some kind of product review.

Merchandising

Many YouTubers get their channel name or logo printed on t-shirts, shorts, shirts and whatnot. They further make their own store and start selling clothing apparels at a specified amount of time. The success of this store is directly related to the popularity of the content creator. Many successful YouTubers like Logan Paul, Jake Paul and Mumbaikar Nikhil have earned a lot of money by this process.
