Independence Day in India (15th August)

July 11, 2021 by Nitin Maheta

What basically independence is? If we talk in reference to a country or state, it is a condition or state in which its population exercise self government and usually sovereignty over the state.

Our country India became independent on 15 August 1947, and from that day we have been celebrating this day every year as Independence Day.

15 August is the day of utmost importance in India because this was the day for which the citizens of India were longing for years. It was after a great difficulty we were able to achieve independence.

All this would never become possible we wouldn’t have the great leaders like Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel , Subhash Chandra Bose, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad etc.

These were the people who struggled hard to make this dream come true. And only they but also Bhaghat Singh , Sukhdev and Rrajguru sacrificed their lives for achieving independence.

India followed the independence by independence movements which were largely led by non violent movement and civil disobedience movement.

But along with the Independence, still there was something that was destined for India and yes it was the partition of the British Indian Empire that coincided with the independence. Ever since then India was divided into religious lines of India into the dominions of India and Pakistan. The partition was accompanied by violent riots and mass casualties..

It was an occasion of jubilation for the entire nation. People throughout the nation celebrated this day with great ecstasy. Throughout the nation people were celebrating, all houses, streets, temples, offices were decorated and illuminated. The only sound that could be heard then was of patriotic songs. All the people whether it be old or young danced, enjoying the newly won freedom. Sweets were distributed everywhere and we were no more under British rule, we had now become a free sovereign nation.

Ever since then 15 August is celebrated as Independence Day in our country. Independence Day is a national holiday for all. Every year a function is held at red fort and various other places in our country. President of our country takes the honor of saluting the ceremony and the guard of honor from the three wings of defence forces. After this comes the flag hoisting ceremony, followed by singing of the national anthem and then by a 21 gun salute.

Thereafter we have the speech by our prime minister, he addresses the nation and salutes all the martyrs along with those unknown people who lost their lives fighting and longing for this independence. in his speech he specifies all the current policies government and various steps they had taken to make India a better nation. In his address he assures the countrymen that the government will try its level best to provide the best possible facilities.

Similar functions take place at state level government also where chief minister unfurls the flag at the state capital , inspects a police parade and addresses the public meeting. At local level government same pattern is followed and at headquarters district collector unfurls the flag. Flag hosting also takes place at school, colleges and various other working places.

Independence day is not only celebrated in India but all over the world by the Indian community.

Political heads of other country also wish us on this very occasion.

It is a happy occasion for all of us. Everyone enjoys , celebrates in their own way and pay due respect to those soldiers who sacrificed their lives so that we may see this day and we may live the life with freedom. Before  giving the rest to my words here is a famous quote by Jawahar Lal Nehru.

26th January Republic Day- a national festival of India

“Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.”
