Different Ways to Say “Hello”

August 22, 2018 by Nitin Maheta

Hi there! Hope you have been greeted well. Now, we can talk about the different ways to say “hello”. Greeting someone means saying “hello” or extending a polite word of welcome. Different countries and even cultures have their own way of saying hello and it is always a part of the conversations. Probably you will greet someone from your native place in a different way than how you will greet your colleagues, friends, storekeepers, strangers etc. There are a lot of different ways to say “hello” in English. It is said that the first impression is the last impression. So, in order to make a good impression, you need to learn how you can use the common greetings very confidently and in a proper way.

You must be thinking why you need to learn all these different ways to greet someone. You must be comfortable in greeting people in your language whether that is Namaste, Hola or Ciao because you think that everybody must be understanding what you are trying to say. But remember that we all are living in a gigantic global village where English is the universal language. If you know the basic way of at least greeting someone in English, you will be able to get away with it. It might be a little overwhelming for you at first, but it does get easier with time and you will be able to learn how to greet different people in different situations.

Hello

Hello!

Formal Meetings: These greetings are formal and are appropriate for formal situations. These can be used to greet your colleagues and when you are in a meeting. You will encounter such greetings in restaurants and business meetings.

  • It is nice to meet you.
  • Hello! How are you?
  • Good morning!
  • Good evening!
  • Good afternoon!
  • It is such a pleasure to meet you.
  • Have a good day.

Informal Meetings: These can be used when you randomly meet someone on the streets or at a party.

  • Hi!
  • How are things?
  • It is really good to see you.
  • Morning!
  • Good day!
  • How are you doing?
  • What’s new?

Casual meetings: These are used in very casual, friendly and familiar contexts. These phrases are mostly used by young people. Avoid using such greetings when you are meeting someone for the first time because it would be highly inappropriate.

  • What’s up?
  • Hey there!
  • What’s happening?
  • Yo!
  • Hey ‘sup?
