Different Ways to Respond to “How Are You?”

“How are you?” We all hear this phrase multiple times throughout the entire day. It is the most basic question for all conversation starters around the world. It is also used across all mediums such as SMS, telephone, email etc. It is one of the most common sentences that we use. But why do we find it so difficult to answer a simple question like this? Most of the time, you end up answering, ‘I am fine.”. It seems okay when you answer it in a basic way on the first day but when you keep saying the same “I am fine.” each and every day then it gets very repetitive and boring. Do not consider it as a basic straightforward question. Treat it as a trick question because answering it is a bit more complicated than what it seems.

1. Gearing up for the week:

This answer will make anyone very enthusiastic. Suppose that your colleague or professor asks you “How are you?” then you can answer, “Hi. Just gearing up for the week. How are you?” Doesn’t it seem super enthusiastic to you? I am sure, it does.


2. I am happy

This phrase is used when you had a great weekend, maybe with your family or friends and that is why you are happy. You can reply “I am happy. I had a great weekend. Thank you. How are you?”


3. I am feeling grateful:

“Well, I am grateful today. How are you?” You can use this phrase when you are having a beautiful morning because the day is sunny and warm and you are grateful to God and nature for everything you have got in your life.


4. Same old, same old:

Maybe you are the kind of a person who has a very monotonous life. You are bored because, maybe, you have been stuck on the same project or assignment for a couple of months. So, you can say, “Same old, same old.”


5. Imagining myself:

On some days, you don’t feel like going to your workplace. You would rather prefer to be at a beach and then you start imagining. On those days, you can come up with a reply like, “I am imagining myself on a beach. How are you?”


6. I have been better:

Some days are good and some of them are bad. Isn’t it? So, on those bad days, you can say use this phrase because you have had better days than that.


7. Trying to stay alive:

We all have those hard days when we are over exhausted or depressed or maybe both. We feel like we are almost dead. So, when someone asks you the same old question, try using this phrase.


8. Better now that you are here:

Everyone has that one person whose presence turns our bad days into good ones. So, when that person asks you the question on a bad day, say, “I am better now that you are here.”

9. I am wondering, how you are?:

It is quite a smart way of asking the same question in return. In case, you do not want to tell how you are, go for this phrase.


10. Do you want the short or long story?:

This phrase is strictly recommended to be used with family and friends who are extremely close to you; otherwise, you will come out to be very rude. It is apt for situations when you are in the mood of a bit of sarcasm.


11. I am ready for tomorrow:

Suppose your friend or colleague asks you, “Hey! How are you?” and you are going to have an important meeting or presentation the next day so you can reply, “I am ready for tomorrow with great spirit. How are you?” Hearing your answer, your colleague will understand how prepared you are for the next day.


12. In need of some peace:

Maybe you are having a stressful day or a chaotic week and just need some peace, then this phrase can be used.


13. I could go for a massage:

“Hi! How are you?” “Hey. I could go for a massage right now. Thank you. How are you?” This phrase shows how you stressed you are and just need a massage or spa session for de-stressing.


14. Want to get away:

Again, this phrase shows that you are having a stressful week but it also shows that you have a great thing to look forward to; maybe an interesting weekend and you just want to get away from your workplace. It is quite a funky way to reply.


15. Can’t wait for the weekend:

When it is Friday the next day and you are excited and thrilled about it because you have great things planned up for the weekend with your friends and family, this phrase is apt for such situations.


16. Loving the lazy Sunday:

Sunday is our favorite day of the weekend. Isn’t it? So, when you are having a quite lazy Sunday and someone calls you and asks, “How are you?” You can say, “Hey. I am loving the lazy Sunday. How are you?”


Hence, we have concluded some of the different and creative ways to respond to “How are you?” Always remember to thank the person and also ask the same question because it shows that you are not a self-centred person. Do not forget to use these different methods and create a good impact.
