Why Showing Gratitude Is Good For You and Those around You

Do you want to make yourself and the people around you happy? Showing a little gratitude can do that. It often gets brushed aside for irritation, exhaustion, and impatience but all of us know that gratitude should be felt and expressed on a regular basis. We should always let people know that we appreciate them and they matter to us. A great sense of happiness prevails in our life when we start focusing on the things we are grateful for.

Gratitude has always had a privileged position in the society. Here, we are listing some reasons for why showing gratitude is good for you and those around you.

1. Improves your relationships:

It has been proved in a survey that people with a grateful partner felt more happy and contented in the romantic relationship. Instead of getting expensive chocolates and flowers, just thank him/her in order to reignite romance in life. It does not matter whether you are newly in love or far beyond the dating stage, gratitude is always good. Higher marital satisfaction can be achieved by showing gratitude. Appreciation contributes a lot to a satisfactory marriage which is long-term.


2. Helps in getting better sleep:

If you are having trouble getting a good sleep, then try thanking people. You can start writing gratitude journal every day for 15 minutes before going to bed. It will help you in improving your sleep quality and the duration of your sleep as well. Grateful people are less likely to worry about negative thoughts that disturb their sleep and are more likely to have positive thoughts which help in enhancing sleep quality. Due to a good sleep, you are fresh all day long and maintain a good behaviour with your loved ones and colleagues.

3. Improves productivity and performance:

During the student life, everyone is aspiring to climb the ladder of the corporate world or heading up to a corporate company. And gratitude goes a long way when you want all of that. When being an employee, you get messages of gratitude from your managers; you immediately feel motivated and start working harder. Even grateful high school going kids get better CGPAs than students who are not grateful.


4. Helps the heart:

You heart feels really good when someone appreciates you and shares his or her positive emotions with you. It literally protects your vital organ. These feelings help in the treatment of hypertension. It has been found in a survey that when an optimist experiences negativity, he/she has the same blood pressure as that of a pessimist, irrespective of mood.


5. Helps in coping with stress:

Showing gratitude helps a lot in coping with stress and anxiety. A survey has shown that people with a high level of gratitude experience low rates of traumatic disorder unlike people with low level of gratitude that experience high rates of traumatic disorder.


Hence, we have concluded the importance of gratitude in our lives and other people’s who are around us. We can benefit from showing people that we are grateful. Letting people know that you appreciate their existence in your lives will not only help in your well-being but also make the people around you feel good.
